Throughout history one stone has been revered above all others. This amazing stone, usually showing up as a translucent stone with a powerful energy to be touched, is known today as jade.
Jade is a name which we give to two different types of minerals, these being nephrite and jadeite.
Nephrite is a more common stone than its expensive counterpart. Though more common and therefore less expensive, this stone is the one which the Chinese have loved and adored for thousands of years. Children were named after this stone to show the parents eternal love for their child, in Chinese this was “Yu”, elixirs were made from jade with the belief that the person who drank it would live forever and weapons were forged with it for its superior hardness.
In China wars were fought over a precious white jade seal, known as the He Shi Bi or the Imperial Seal of China. This stone was of impeccable quality, superior to all others. However owned this ancient seal was believed to be the divinely chosen leader of a united China. Though this jade seal has been lost to history its power still emanates today.
While jade has historically been the most valued by the Chinese, though today green jade is by far the most valuable of all jade jewelry.
Though nephrite is the historical gem of China, today the most valuable pieces of jade are actually jadeite because of its rarity. Commercial amounts of this gem come out of Burma and flawless, gem quality pieces can fetch almost outrageous prices.
So be sure to set your expectations high in terms of price and value. A green jade necklace is not going to be the same price as the typical fashion necklaces you purchase on the web. Remember when looking at prices of jade that jade is to the east as diamonds are to the west. Each piece is unique and is believed to actually have a mind of its own. This fact is obvious when looking into a gem stone, easily getting lost in its eternal depths and vivid colors, the sun shining right through the stone yet it being one of the toughest natural substances on earth.
