Your Daughter’s First Pair of Earrings

I come from a culture where a baby girl has her ears pierced during infancy. In fact, when I found out that most American teenage girls have yet to undergo this procedure, I was puzzled. I mostly assumed that because all the women I knew had pierced ears, everybody did it. Whether you are having your daughter’s ears pierced at a tender age, or waiting until they are more grown up is usually the mother’s prerogative. However, it would be best if the first pair of earrings is chosen ahead of time rather than just immediately before the procedure when your daughter needs your presence more. While relatively painless and quick if done using a piercing gun, she may be feeling apprehensive and scared at this time and would prefer that you stay beside her. And this fear has nothing to do with the style of earrings but rather the experience. Some prefer fashion jewelry earrings and some think that diamonds are the way to go from the start.
The type of earring that you choose would have a lot to do with your daughter’s age and her preferences (if she is already old enough to have any). If your daughter is still too young to make a decision about this, then make sure that you choose the appropriate pair. Avoid designs such as chandeliers, and other ornate pieces. For one thing, the earrings will have to be loaded into a piercing gun and might get accidentally caught in the mechanism. Also, you need something that will be easy to sanitize because it will essentially be stuck into the ear lobe. The earring itself will have to be very clean to avoid any complications or infection.
Try to stick to simple studs. A new piercing will tend to be sore for the first day, and chandelier earrings that pull too much at the piercing will tend to be irritating and uncomfortable. In addition, the earrings will have to stay in place for a while, so you need to choose ones that are going to be comfortable to wear for a spell. If the earrings are removed too soon, the piercings can close up again. Make sure to pick metals that are hypoallergenic. If you cannot afford a pair of gold earrings, there are other options that you can use such as sterling silver or hypoallergenic stainless metals. In some cases though, even these metals can cause some reaction particularly to very sensitive individuals so you will need to monitor the piercings for any signs of itching, redness and swelling. Some pain is to be expected but when accompanied by a fever, even a slight one, you will need to consult your physician for advice.
