Since the early 1980s, a significant number of male artists, musicians, athletes and various celebrities have been making stylish fashion statements with earrings, thus breaking into an area long-perceived to be the exclusive fashion of women. However, as historical facts suggest, earrings for men have been around for centuries.
The earliest evidence of men’s earrings came with the discovery of carved images on walls in ancient Persepolis which feature early 19th century Persian soldiers wearing earrings. When archaeologists unearthed the mummified body of a man with earrings in 1991, it was confirmed, earrings were indeed worn by some men, if not all, from early times. Around the mid 20th century, ear piercing entered the male domain and soon became an immensely popular and trendy accessory among fashion-conscious young men.
Today, earrings for men come in a variety of styles, materials, sizes and precious/semi-precious stones, ranging from the simple to the flamboyant. Diamond earrings for men are one ostentatious example of the latter. Insofar as materials, these include metal (gold, silver, platinum, etc.) glass, beads, and plastic, among others.
Unlike women, most men prefer earrings that are less elaborate and more masculine in appeal, and therefore go for gem-free, metal earrings that are simpler in design. The two most popular conceptual designs in men’s earrings are ‘Studs’ and ‘Hoops’, both designed for men with pierced ear lobes.
Stud earrings consist of a stud (precious metal or stone) at one end of a fine pin (post) that is either plain or threaded at its other end. The pin penetrates the ear lobe and is secured behind the ear by a miniature nut or other locking mechanism to keep the stud in place. What’s nice is that the stud is the only visible feature of these earrings.
Hoop earrings, as the name suggests, are circular in design and generally made of hollow metal tubing, such as silver, gold, platinum or bronze. Each set has a fine wire attachment that is passed through the ear lobe/s and fastened behind. Given today’s extensive range of men’s earrings on offer, it’s clear that these fashion jewelry accessories for men aren’t only gaining in popularity, but they’re here to stay.
