Facts About Earrings for Men

Since the early 1980s, a significant number of male artists, musicians, athletes and various celebrities have been making stylish fashion statements with earrings, thus breaking into an area long-perceived to be the exclusive fashion of women. However, as historical facts suggest, earrings for men have been around for centuries.

The earliest evidence of men’s earrings came with the discovery of carved images on walls in ancient Persepolis which feature early 19th century Persian soldiers wearing earrings. When archaeologists unearthed the mummified body of a man with earrings in 1991, it was confirmed, earrings were indeed worn by some men, if not all, from early times. Around the mid 20th century, ear piercing entered the male domain and soon became an immensely popular and trendy accessory among fashion-conscious young men.

Today, earrings for men come in a variety of styles, materials, sizes and precious/semi-precious stones, ranging from the simple to the flamboyant. Diamond earrings for men are one ostentatious example of the latter. Insofar as materials, these include metal (gold, silver, platinum, etc.) glass, beads, and plastic, among others.

Unlike women, most men prefer earrings that are less elaborate and more masculine in appeal, and therefore go for gem-free, metal earrings that are simpler in design. The two most popular conceptual designs in men’s earrings are ‘Studs’ and ‘Hoops’, both designed for men with pierced ear lobes.

Stud earrings consist of a stud (precious metal or stone) at one end of a fine pin (post) that is either plain or threaded at its other end. The pin penetrates the ear lobe and is secured behind the ear by a miniature nut or other locking mechanism to keep the stud in place. What’s nice is that the stud is the only visible feature of these earrings.

Hoop earrings, as the name suggests, are circular in design and generally made of hollow metal tubing, such as silver, gold, platinum or bronze. Each set has a fine wire attachment that is passed through the ear lobe/s and fastened behind. Given today’s extensive range of men’s earrings on offer, it’s clear that these fashion jewelry accessories for men aren’t only gaining in popularity, but they’re here to stay.

Sterling Silver Hoop Earrings Look Great

I don’t know about you, but my wife has a pretty huge collection of earrings.  There must be over a hundred pair in her jewelry box right now – gold earrings, copper earrings, even some diamond earrings – but the ones she seems to reach for the most are her sterling silver hoop earrings.  She does love those earrings!  Because she wears them a lot, they don’t get super tarnished, but once in awhile, they do need a quick sprucing up.  Read on to see how she keeps her sterling silver hoop earrings looking great.

Clean Your Sterling Silver Hoop Earrings

Ok, here’s the rub:  Regular jewelry cleaners do a good job of cleaning off dirt, smudges and skin oil from sterling silver.  They don’t remove tarnish, though.  There are some great jewelry polishing cloths available that will take off some of that icky tarnish, and they are generally inexpensive.  You can buy them at most discount stores, and some jewelers will give them away for free if you bring jewelry in to be fixed or cleaned professionally.  My sterling silver hoop earrings have a little etched pattern on them, however, and the polishing cloth won’t get into those little “nooks”.  To get all of that tarnish off, I crumple a piece of foil, put it in a glass baking dish, and place my hoops on the foil.  I cover the earrings with about 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda, and then I pour boiling water over all.  The tarnish melts off my earrings!  Take them out of this baking soda/water bath after a minute or two and rinse them off, dry with a soft cloth, and viola, they look like new again!  Be very careful doing this with sterling silver that has any other gemstones attached.  Cubic zirconia rings and other hard gems will be ok, but don’t do this with any sterling silver emerald rings (or any emerald jewelry), or anything with pearls on it.

Storage of Sterling Silver Jewelry

Ok, now that you’ve got those earrings looking great, you will need to store them properly.  Tarnish will re-appear when sterling is left out in the air.  If you wear them  often, this might not be much of a problem.  If they are left out for any length of time, though, they will tarnish for sure.  Use small plastic bags with zippers on them to store silver jewelry or other fashion jewelry pieces you might have (velvet bags work well, also).  The baggies are neat, though, because you can see exactly what is in them.  Just doing this 10 second step every time you take off your earrings will help keep them tarnish-free and scratch free so they will look great every time you put them on.

So you see, just by giving your sterling silver hoop earrings some easy care, and by storing them the right way, they will be ready and waiting for you whenever you need them.  All it takes is a few minutes, and you will be rewarded with a wonderfully clean and bright, very versatile pair of earrings you can wear anywhere, anytime!

Fashion Jewelry Earrings Are Trending

Fashion jewelry earrings have always been a blistering style item. When someone is wearing a handmade set of earrings and those earrings attract the attention of others, you know that you have made a fashion statement. Fashion jewelry earrings can be made from natural resources, artificial materials, or costly raw metals. All three types, however, can be made into necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.  Fashionable earrings in a drop or chandelier style can be particularly trendy with a beaded jewelry accessory. Even if jewelry is handmade or artificial, a classy piece will always find its way to compliment your style.

Fashion jewelry earrings are perfect for casual wear during the day or night. The essential black dress will always looks chic on a woman, but looks even more stylish if you include a thread of real gold or silver around her neck. Classic porcelain earring worn at an afternoon tea are bound to draw interest from the other ladies in the group. It is not unusual for fashion jewelry to exist in cycles. Just like clothing, something that was popular several decades ago can definitely make a comeback in the world of fashion.

Fashion jewelry earrings are one thing any woman can wear, even if she owns no other jewelry, or does not favor fine metals. Manufacturers and jewelry artisans pay attention to what other women will wear. Knowledgeable women may even test the market for vintage beads and combine them with current beads to create their own jewelry. Sometimes this can set off a new fashion trend. A bracelet or necklace with brand new lantern beads can become an exchange piece that other women will want to duplicate in style. Most of all, jewelry does not need to be expensive to create. All it requires is a bit of local searching plus an ounce of creativity to make fashion earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. The cool things is that  fashion jewelry earrings can always be in style, no matter what designs or materials are used in the jewelry.
